LAHORE: Hamara to wazir-e-khazana ja raha hay (Our finance minister is leaving), Prime Minister Gilani was caught telling former finance minister Ishaq Dar, moments before the start of Monday’s press conference after his meeting with PML-N leaders.

Perhaps not realising that at least one among the array of microphones on the table in front of him was switched on, Mr Gilani also leaned over to his left to Nawaz Sharif and shared his admiration for Mr Dar.

Monday’s newspapers quoted Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin as vigorously denying he had resigned. Earlier, news reports suggested that the finance minister had resigned due to serious reservations over the government’s rental power policy but was asked to continue till a successor had been decided.

The prime minister’s accidentally-aired remarks only add to the confusion.

“Mr Tarin holds a key ministry and this air of uncertainty must be cleared, and cleared quickly, if an adverse market reaction is to be prevented and economic stability ensured,” was how one analyst saw it.
