ISLAMABAD: The controversy over the issue of who will write the letter to Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari takes a new turn as the National Accountability Chairman (NAB) presents his resignation to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday.

The government has so far been resisting the pressure from apex court for reopening cases against President Zardari saying the president enjoyed immunity against such proceedings.

The NAB chairman was summoned by the Chief Justice a few days ago and warned of action in case court’s verdict was not implemented.

On Wednesday the NAB chairman Naveed Ahsan met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and after briefing the prime minister about the progress on the implementation of the apex court verdict he offered to resign.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani asked the NAB chairman to continue working till the appointment of his successor. The resignation of NAB chairman will not resolve the issue of reopening of Swiss cases against President Asif Zardari as is required by an impatient apex court.

Earlier in the day the NAB chairman called on Attorney General Anwar Mansur and discussed with him the question, as to who will write the letter to Swiss authorities.

Sources said there is a likelihood of the Attorney General agreeing to writing a technical letter without commenting on merits of the case.
